The Madison community is grieving the tragic loss of a local high school student who died Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing South Park Street on the way to school.

According to the Madison Police Department (MPD), the crash occurred early Thursday, February 5, 2026, along South Park Street between North Avenue and Burr Oak Lane. Police say the pedestrian, a 17-year-old student, was hit by a vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts, the teen later died at the hospital.

At 10:03 a.m., authorities confirmed the student’s death and announced that the incident remained under active investigation. Both directions of South Park Street were closed for several hours as MPD traffic specialists worked the scene, documenting evidence and reconstructing the crash. The roadway was reopened at approximately 10:25 a.m., though investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Later in the day, West High School identified the victim as a 17-year-old senior, sending shockwaves through classmates, teachers, and families across the district. The student was reportedly walking to school at the time of the crash.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” officials said, noting that more information will be released as the investigation progresses. At this time, police have not announced whether charges will be filed or if additional factors contributed to the incident.
